About Me

Born in Perth, Scotland in 1961, I have been involved with childbirth for most of my working life.

Further to a stint of TEFL in Peru and Portugal, I qualified and worked as a midwife across Scotland, in London and voluntarily with Marie Stopes, Madagascar. My interest in homeopathy grew from being treated with homeopathic medicine through childhood to witnessing its benefits on mothers and babies as a practising midwife. I completed my training with the Faculty of Homeopathy and the British Institute of Homeopathy shortly before my daughter was born in 2000. Her gentle birth, at home in water, inspired me to focus specifically on facilitating normality around childbirth and to establish Birth Consultancy Services.

Disheartened by the increasingly medicalised approach to childbirth and lack of opportunity to provide grassroots midwifery care, I began working exclusively as a doula (lay birth and postnatal supporter) and childbirth homeopath in 2002. I believe that any real change in birth culture can only come from women ourselves, as a doula I am able to honour the ceremony and spirituality surrounding birth and encourage mothers and fathers towards conscious birth and positive parenting.

In 2004, I was awarded a Winston Churchill Travel Fellowship to examine the integration of homeopathy in maternity care in Cuba. I am currently researching my new book "Gentle Birth Attendants". I practise Tai Chi on a regular basis and live with my husband and daughter in South West Scotland.
